Singer, composer, and living music legend Rico Blanco cries foul over an alleged intellectual misuse of his song Posible in one of presidentiable Gibo Teodoro ads referred to as Sulong Gibo.
Rico tweeted:
i’m itching to tweet about this VERY STRANGE intellectual property issue that came to my attention just last night. (via Twitter @1ricoblanco)
The aforequoted statement was just a start of series of tweets. Other pertinent tweets show that Rico would like his lawyers to handle the issue on intellectual property.
Furthermore, he tweeted:
i’d like to understand how can a presidentiable can overlook a simple matter such as intellectual property. command responsibility. (via Twitter @1ricoblanco)
The band legend also said via Twitter the the campaign ad enlisted the services of someone who has a similar singing voice.
ok finally saw it. very nice ad. but wow. they even copied my singing/voice. so it cant be that they just werent aware i existed. sakitsaulo (via Twitter @1ricoblanco)
This made many Rico Blanco fans to assume that Rico was endorsing Gibo.
On the other hand, Carlos Celdran tweeted that Viva acquired the rights to use the song:
@1ricoblanco Viva Group was paid in full for rights for song used in campaign ad. Has Viva notified you? (via Twitter @carlosceldran)
Carlos also inquired whether the rights to use the song belongs to Viva, Rivermaya, or Rico on his sole personal capacity. Evidently, Carlos’ argument was based on the right to ownership.
I do not know the other facts of the case, other than those that can be easily gleaned at the surface level. This is a question of ownership. Ownership is a real right that can be invoked against the whole world. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it appears that Rico’s claim is based on moral obligation only.
I am not saying that Rico is bereft of legal claim, should it be proven that Gibo did misuse his song, the use of the song might be seen to have been done in bad taste. Gibo knows his laws, codal, jurisprudence, or otherwise. He topped the bar so I guess his actions were firmly based on legal grounds. But still, as I said, Rico may not be bereft of any claim over the subject matter.
Just my two cents worth.

I too first thought it was first, Rico singing to song for the ad, and second, maybe Rico is endorsing Gibo, the same Gloc9 is for Bro. Eddie.
This is a hot twist…and another bad blow to the already dismal ratings of Gibo.
eimot : Nagdra-drama lang si Rico as the rights to song now owned by VIVA. Gibo camp paid viva – its now between viva and Rico. Any ad agency in their right mind would not pirate a song. So sorry to burst your bubble.. no HOT TWIST here. The song was even used with permission from Viva for the SEA Games. All this from River Maya manager Lizza Nakpil.
who cares? Gibo still will be one of the tailenders by may 2010. even his vp is doing poorly.
Gordon-Roxas is the way to go!
Latest from ABS-CBN news, Rico Blanco said about Gibo “To be fair, he is on my very short list. so i hope things get sorted out. he seems to be smart and all.” Rico is already fixing this with the right people. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/01/07/10/rico-blanco-slams-gibo-teodoro-over-posible-song Hope Pinoy Gossip Boy can tweet this and update his post to clear the air. Thank you Pinoy Gossip Boy!

Carlos Celdran posted a twitpic of this on Facebook…I forget kung ano yung title nya mismo, but it’s like an intellectual property rights document that states the length of time that VIVA holds the rights to the song.
gibo and dennis garcia were duped. they paid the wrong person. viva does not own the copyright to posible nor have they been assigned by rico/russel molina as publishers. lizza is also not the publisher. she is even claiming to be the author. absurd! buyer beware applies.. the national lib deposit certificate she showed is invalid because of earlier proof of ownership. simple lang naman yun..
Why do we give a hype or big deal for a news report about the controversy involving the song of Rico Blanco in Gibo political ad shown in our tv. This matters can be settled amicably without making a lot issues behind it.
grabe nga to. kung ayaw ng orig na kumanta sa yo, bakit ka magpipilit? Oh right, RBlanco is KNOWN, Gibo, sadly, is not.
