Since it was the first meeting for my class with Atty. Batongbacal, the same class where he joked that I am doing unauthorized practice of law, the class ended way early as it is supposed to. Hence, I was able to catch the showing of the first full length musical written for movie – Emir.
I know it had been almost a week since I saw Emir but I had been too busy adjusting to the first week of classes in UP Law that I had to put my writing of a movie review of Emir in abeyance. (Yes, ala “Motion to Hold in Abeyance the Issuance of Warrant of Arrest”).
Emir stars, or rather introduces, if we will go technical with this, showbiz newcomer Frencheska Farr in a leading role. She plays the barrio lass who went to a Middle Eastern country to work as nanny to the son of a Sheik.
I don’t wish to go into details about the movie but I must say that Frencheska was very good on her first lead role. Despite issues of Direk Chito Rono lambasting Frencheska for her shortcomings, she turned out to be an effective lead. I know I commented about the trade offs of casting a newcomer but I think Frencheska was good.
I really think that a full length musical film is something that our industry is lacking. With the successful return of the musical genre in the US television, I strongly believe that our local film industry is amiable to such kind of genre.
The production numbers were nothing short of fantastic. All of the cast members were in their elements. I also love how the film portrays the up and owns of OFWs working abroad.
Emir showcases not only Filipino workers but Filipino talents as well. The movie was able to frame valuable Filipino traits and encapsulate them in a wonderful musical production.
Indeed, Frencheska Farr has proven that she is the next big star. With her grand introduction to showbiz, I am sure that she has more to show than just being a superb singer and actress.
